My first big 3D origami project finished on December 18, 2012
It's about 18" long, from tail tip to whiskers. Obviously, it wasn't made from a single piece of folded paper. It took me a while to make this, since I had to cut, fold, and attach each piece myself (about 1/4 of the way into the project I discovered an X-Acto knife and realized I could make my life a whole lot easier with the cutting process
Hardest part was making the head, it's so irregular...
but I found a way
The koi's body (hollow but sturdy) is made of folded triangles, and the fins' pieces are something I can only describe as a result of messing around with an origami heart. The head is made of squares of woven strips of paper... woven to attach to each other. I would've posted up (I may eventually) the number of individual pieces in total, but the thought of counting it all scares the bejeesus outta me
Anyhoo, it's all put together with Elmer's white school glue
except for parts that were harder to attach, like the tail fin and back fin, and the head; I used a hot glue gun for those. Then it was all painted with my favorite German watercolors!
It turned out a lot better than I thought it would (actually it's the art piece I'm most proud of so far), considering I didn't use any references and the structural planning and everything else was an idea off the top of my head. That being said, I can't tell you guys how I made it, it's too complicated and I don't think you all would have the time/patience to make it anyway.
